- Introduction
to Coatings Science--at The
University of Southern Mississippi
- March
12-15, 2007
- Course
Highlights
This
is a four-day, all-lecture short course that teaches the basic
principles of synthesis, design, testing, and performance evaluation
of solvent, waterborne, high-solids, UV-cured, and powder coatings.
Polymer synthesis will be reviewed with examples of chain-growth,
step-growth, and ring-opening polymerizations. Pigment types
and selection will be covered along with a primer on causes
of color and color measurement. ASTM test protocols for coatings
and dry films will also be discussed. The role of additives
and crosslinking agents in coatings will be presented along
with an introduction to surface pretreatment.

Who
should attend
Entry-level
coatings chemists with responsibilities in coatings research,
design and development, production, quality control, technical
service, sales, and marketing. Professionals from pigment, resin,
and additive manufacturing industries; manufacturers of paints,
varnishes, and lacquers; paint consumers, including aerospace,
automotive, industrial, consumer durables, wood, and coil coatings,
food and beverage container industry, and cosmetics; and industries
that design coatings for manufacturing and testing equipment.
Participants from coatings-allied industries will find the course
instructive, informative, and useful.
