Research Areas

Structure-property relationships in ion-containing polymers, random ionomers, semicrystalline polymers and membranes. Morphological and physical property modifications of polymers via the incorporation of small quantities of ion-containing monomer units. Morphological manipulation of ionomer membrane materials for enhanced fuel cell applications. Development of new ionomer processing procedures for PEMFC membrane electrode assemblies (MEA's). Control of morphology-transport property relationships in membranes via tailored processing procedures and controlled molecular/supramolecular architecture. Utilization of electrostatic interactions in preparation of optically-active materials based on ionomer/dye guest-host systems. Polymer-based nanocomposites for improved chemical and physical properties. Polymer blend compatibilization via specific interactions and reactive extrusion. Reactive functionalization of polymers.
